Sal Island is the most visited and accessible location on Cape Verde. Sal Island has the best facilities and infrastructure of the Cape Verde isles - with an international airport - and as such is the most suited to tourism. Ponta Preta beach is one of the best examples of the pristine white sand beaches that Sal is famous for. The resort is also close to the popular town of Santa Maria, with its variety of bars, restaurants and shops. Ideal for sun worshippers who head for the resort hotels, luxury apartments and private villas that are springing up along the coast between the airport and Santa Maria. Arguably Sal is the most cosmopolitan island in the archipelago as nightlife abounds, with a choice of bars, clubs and restaurants. Freshly caught fish is always on the menu – tuna steaks, lobster, and swordfish – cooked to a local recipe. Places to visit include the Pedro Lume salt mines – dramatically contained inside the vast Caldeira of a long extinct volcano – the saliency level is on a par with the Dead Sea and is well worth experiencing for a weightless float. Sal is the best place to stay if you've got little ones in tow, as children are more often than not endlessly fascinated with the delights of sun, sea and sand. Its tourist-focused attractions also mean that there are a number of options for mini day trips, as well as suitable cafes and restaurants to accommodate the picky tastes of small children. If you are looking for a luxurious holiday in Cape Verde, then take a look at our recommended luxury hotels, apartments and villas on the island of Sal.
